Dryden firefighters to receive awards today

At halftime during today's Cornell-Princeton football game, a number of fire fighters from the Town of Dryden and Bangs Ambulance will be receiving awards:

  • Captain Ken Vorstadt of Neptune Hose Company will be receiving the Firefighter of the Year award.
  • Jennifer Wildridge of Neptune Hose Company will be receiving the Volunteer of the Year award.
  • Chief Roy Rizzo of the Varna Fire Company will be receiving the Special Valor Award for his actions at the February 23rd incident that killed Harford firefighter Bret Neff.
  • Bangs Ambulance EMT Andrew Dean will be receiving the EMS award for spotting the February 23rd fire, coming to the scene, and for his efforts to save Neff's life.

The Board of Elections will be open this morning until noon, if you need to pick up an absentee ballot in person.

In Darts & Laurels, Paul Ferris of Dryden thanks "our hometown community of Dryden" for "the support, kindness, generosity, thoughts and prayers that you have all offered has given us great comfort during this difficult time with the passing of Michele Longo Ferris."

The opinion page, unsurprisingly, is full of letters about Tuesday's election. Dryden letters include:

  • Brian Richards of the Town of Dryden warns that "Senators Kerry and Edwards have rolled out plan after plan, but merely proposing plans does not translate into an ability to govern or lead."
  • Joyce Kantor of Freeville writes about the congressional race in the 24th district, challenging incumbent Sherwood Boehlert's record. She writes, "In 2002 conservative groups gave him a 90 percent approval rating (up from 61 percent in 1998). This is a moderate record? We need a representative who can judge issues on their merits. Let's elect Jeff Miller."
  • Linda and Buzz Lavine of the Town of Dryden argue that "Kerry has demonstrated integrity and intelligence. I believe he is a great choice: he is certainly the better choice."
