Reptile invasion

A crowd of reptiles and their amphibian allies descended on Varna this afternoon:

Fortunately, they were in the care of the Cornell Herpetological Society, and were there to educate and entertain.

Angelika and I wandered down to the community center to see the creatures, and came back with some good ideas for adding rockpiles to our garden to attract snakes that should help eat our slug and rodent populations. The people presenting were interesting, and the displays, especially the touchable ones, were fascinating.

If you'd like to see more, I've posted a gallery.

If I'm not mistaken, the bearded snake handler at the top of page 2 in your gallery is Roger Stern, better (internationally!) known for his comic books than for his love of herps. He and his wife were friends of friends and used to deliver rat snakes to my old house, presumably because there was more acreage (and no doubt more rodents) than at their place in town.

As resident expert for snack-sized rodents I most emphatically protest the idea that snakes should be encouraged to eat rodents in our garden. - Legless creatures should stick to toys that do not squeek!
